Est. 2023 — Los Angeles

Bringing the motherland home.

Motherland Sounds is more than an event — it's a dynamic community and a cultural homecoming. Built in Los Angeles for the Ethiopian and Eritrean diaspora, we stand at the intersection of East African music, food, and identity, creating joyful, proud spaces where the culture shows up fully.

From the injera on the table to the tej in your hand to the top selectors on the decks — every detail is intentional. This isn't a themed night. It's a room full of people who feel it the same way you do.

Mission

Our mission is to celebrate the creativity & diversity of East African culture across the global diaspora.

We showcase expressions of art, identity, sound, and community gathering — creating respectful, joyful, and proud spaces for them to live. Spaces to experience inspiration, freedom, connection, and belonging. We stand for the agency and self-determination of our community, and the ownership of the value created by our dynamic cultures.

What makes us different

The experience

This isn't just a party. It's a full sensory homecoming — the sounds, the food, the people, the feeling of being exactly where you belong.

The food

Injera on every table

Walk in and the smell hits you first. We bring the food of the motherland to the table — injera, tibs, the dishes you grew up on — because the culture doesn't stop at the music. Eating together is part of the ritual.

The drink

Honey wine in your hand

Tej — Ethiopian honey wine — flows at every Motherland Sounds gathering. It's not a novelty, it's a nod. A way of saying: this space was built with you in mind, not just for you to fit into.

The DJs

Top selectors, every time

We don't book people who play the motherland as a set — we book selectors who live it. Residents and guests who know the catalog deeply enough to surprise you, take you somewhere unexpected, and still bring you home by the last song.

Also behind Honey Baby, a sister experience under the same roof.
